Baskerville Hall was built in 1839 by Thomas Mynors Baskerville, and has long been known as haunted. You may recognise the name, which inspired the famous horror novel, The Hound Of The Baskervilles, which was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Inspiring A Famous Novel
The author was an admirer of this historic property, and a friend of the Baskerville family who originally owned it. The Baskervilles were, interestingly, also related to the Dukes of Normandy, and first arrived in Britain in 1066 to aid William the Conqueror. It is said that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would visit frequently, and it is here that inspired one of the best-known Sherlock Holmes novels of all time.
Baskerville Hall Hotel
The building still stands today, and is now a functioning hotel named Baskerville Hall Hotel, which is open to the public for booking. It’s based on beautiful grounds in the Welsh Countryside, just outside of Hay-On-Wye in South Wales.
Ghostly Encounters At Baskerville Hall Hotel
Many staff and guests who visit the hall claim to see apparitions of similar descriptions. Two particular ghosts are, apparently, regularly encountered, including the White Lady, thought to be Elizabeth Baskerville, the former lady of the house, who enjoys visiting the Rose Garden most of all. The second is an unknown man who roams the stairs and sometimes the rooms of the hotel. This man apparently stares at the people he encounters, and simply vanishes when he is confronted by them. Neat way to get out of a confrontation, right?
Many guests of the hotel have also reported banging noises and footsteps during their stay, including noises from neighbouring rooms that are unoccupied at the time. Others have even reported heavy footsteps following them around the house, yet have no explanation for where they would be coming from.
